Taping the nose after a rhinoplasty


If people do not satisfy of the appearance of their nose, they intend to have nose surgery. Nose surgery is done in order to change the form of nose and also remove other problems inside nose. Nose surgeons suggest that after Rhinoplasty for contracting skin and solidifying bone and cartilages the nose should be taped. Taping nose after Rhinoplasty can prohibit making scar tissue between skin and tissue of bone and cartilage. If scar tissue is made and skin is contracted, skin cannot cover structures around itself completely and it leads to creating weal and unevenness on the skin. How much time is needed for taping

The required time for using tape on the nose is different. It can be between 2 weeks to 2 months. this different time depends on the type of skin of nose. If the skin of the nose is clear and thin the tape can be removed after 2 weeks but if the skin is thick, it is better to use the tape on the nose up to two months. Maybe the people who have nose surgery , ask this question that, does it make any problem to use the tape on the nose for a longer time? the answer is that taping the nose for people who have nose surgery with thin or thick skin is different .in the case of thin skin tape should be on the nose up to 6 months and it doesn`t make any problem . But for the people who have thick skin, it is better to use tape for a longer time. The method of putting tape on the nose should be done very carefully and the important point is that, tip of the nose should not be under the tape .also the time of changing the tape is important and should be considered. The usual time for changing the tape is between 3 to 6 days while if the tape becomes dirty or lose it should be changed sooner. for the first week after surgery it is recommended that your surgeon changes the tape and after learning how to do it you can change it by yourself.

The pressure from the tape “splints” the new nasal structure in place to better control healing. The pressure of the tape also “presses out” the swelling and tissue edema. The procedure can be used particularly in thick-skinned patients, in whom skin draping and nasal refinement is crucial to the surgical outcome. Taping can irritate the nose in some cases. Some patients can tolerate taping very well for long periods, others cannot .Some patients have difficulty removing the residue from the tape in the morning. You can Let your nose and your anatomy give you that message. If you cannot tolerate taping, the signs are usually irritation, redness, and bumps from the tape. Stop taping if this case or try interrupting the process for several days until the irritation clears, then try again.

What Type Of Tape To Use After Rhinoplasty ?

Microspore tape is one of the best types of tape for nose. It is anti-sensitive and has good stickiness. There is other type of tapes that called glass tape. These types of tapes make skin to be red and oily so because of this reason it is not recommended to use, just in a case that the person wants to have tape on his or her nose for a short period of time or after nose surgery oil on the skin of the nose is reduced, this type of tape is suggested to be used. And the last point that most of people who have nose surgery ask is that is it possible not to tape their nose for one or two days? There is nothing to be worried. Some of these people because they want to take part in a ceremony and do not like to have tape on their nose, so there is no problem not to tape their nose and they can put tape on their nose again after ceremony.

When and how to tap


Taping can be safely performed at any times and as often as you like. doctors recommend this schedule at a minimum:

  • Begin immediately after the splint is removed. Do this for at least six (6) weeks, at least at night.
  • If you don’t mind taping during the day, it is fine to do so.
  • After six (6) weeks taping can be discontinued. If you notice some return of swelling then it is okay to resume taping if you wish.


Taping has special cares. To remove taping, you should take a warm bath and let the water pours on your nose. Then, soap the nose and gently remove it from down to top. Removing the tape from top to down, should be prohibited.  After removing the tape:

  • Wash your nose with mild soap and water and blot dry. Wait 5-10 minutes.
  • Use the Micropore tape provided to cut three pieces of tape (1- 1.5 inch).
  • Place the three pieces of tape on the bridge of the nose starting with the highest part of the nose and working your way downward toward the tip of your nose (Steps 1-3 on picture).
  • Cut two longer pieces of tape and place each piece of tape along each nasal wall. Pinch the ends of the tape together and cut off the extra portion (Steps 4 and 5 on picture) .
  • Add one piece of tape to tip of nose (Step 6 on picture) .
  • Tape every night (only at night) as directed.
